recent books
absurdistan by Gary Shteyngart - well written but with i intensely hate the main character. very unsympathetic. we'll see how it develops
william shakespeare by bill bryson - almost done this but it's been very interesting. amazing to see how small the world was at that point in time and how big an impact this one guy had. great read.
his dark materials by philip pullman - i'm on book 3 and it's a million times better than that stupid movie they made of the golden compass
what is the what by dave eggers - awesome. hands down one of the best books i've ever read.
when you are engulfed in flames by david sedaris - still one of the funniest writers i've ever found. kept me in stitches. even the bf laughed out loud when he read it!
god is not great by christopher hitchens - just on chapter 2 now and already loving it. kinda hard but some great quotes. - 2 big thumbs up on this one.
middlesex by jeffrey eugenides - just started it but i like it so far.
confessor by terry goodkind - finally wrapped this series up. not so sure about the ending. little too perfectly wrapped up.
blind fall by christopher rice - god this book was bad! bad dialogue, ridiculous characters, just sucked all round.
the indian clerk by david leavitt - i started this without reading the jacket so i'm not really sure what it's about
the year of living biblically by a.j. jacobs - this oughta be hysterical - yep. awesome book!
the glass castle by jeannette walls - finally a book about a family that is even more fucked up than mine. makes me think i might end up ok in spite of them.
savage detectives by roberto bolano - good and odd and awful all at the same time. it took me half the book to understand what the mexican poet that wrote it was doing. in the end it was totally worth it.
ovenman by jeff parker - amazing book! read it in one lovely afternoon but it's really good and by a toronto author
omnivore's dilemma - the follow up to the botany of desire but arguably even better. changes how you see your food.
kite runner by khalid hosseini - awesome view on a part of the world i understand so little about
straken by terry brooks - been reading his books since i was a kid. always interesting.
a spot of bother by mark haddon - just started this but loving it. told from different characters' perspectives. his first book was also excellent - awesome book. have passed it on to daniel
possible side effects by augusten burroughs - damn this book is funny. short stories that make me laugh out loud, cringe when i recognize myself and on at least one occasion cry a little bit
culture code by clotaire rapaille - interesting book but maybe a little light. I'd like to see a chart or comparisons of the codes that he comes up with
the knife of dreams - book 11 (when will it end?!) of the wheel of time series - good as always and hopefully book 12 will be the last. i've been reading this series for a decade! time to wrap it up!
harry potter and the deathly hallows - perfect. the battle of hogwarts is amazing. the movie will be justifiably 4 hours long - amazing way to end the series
harry potter and the half blood prince - i'm so freaking excited to get the final HP book this saturday that i'm re-reading the half blood prince to refresh my memory
bloodletting and miraculous cures - fantastic. I don't usually go for short stories but these are all related and, as usual, left me frustrated and wanting more.
auntie mame - finally started this book (daniel was mad i'd had it in my pile for so long) and he's right, it's laugh out loud on the subway funny!
zero: the biography of a dangerous idea - so far this is a great book but it should really be called "history of god 2: the math" so far it's pretty easy to understand and well written
history of god by karen armstrong - this is a really interesting book but I seem to have to read each page twice! - ok wow. hard book but mind blowing! recommended reading for anyone living in the 21st century
the effect of living backwards by heidi julavitis - 2nd attempt at this. doesn't make a lot of sense but keeping at it
tsotsi by athol fugard - just started it but it's good so far - ok. great book. hated the ending.
indigenous beasts by nate sellyn - great book of really dark short stories - highly recommended
all the names by jose saramago - slow going - finally done - not sure it was worth it
