busy few days!

it all started thursday night when the kid (h) and her bf invited us to dinner jamie kennedy's weekly eat local dinner. sadly my bf was occupado out of town so i took second runner up joseph instead. the food was amazing! for starters jk is a great chef when he pays attention and the ingredients provided by stoddart farm were exceptional. you know it's good lamb when i like it because i usually hate lamb.

the stoddart farm is run the same way at that farm from the omnivore's dilemma book that i read a while back. it was very cool to have the farmer there and his love for his products came across in spades. also there was the rep for stratus wines who was very charming/nervous. he also has his own wine but he only makes riesling. which is weird as i've never met anyone who just made one kind of wine. he gets different grapes from different vineyards and makes it a special local brand (ie farm A riesling, farm B riesling) so you can taste the difference in the grapes. neat concept.

friday night i was off to the opera with some friends. or at least i thought i was. turns out it was the ballet (ugh). not only that but it was a modern ballet interpretation of the opera carmen. i was totally lost at first with all the poetry and underwater imagery until someone pointed out that was just the opening act and not the main event. gotta say the main part was good....i guess...some of the little ballerinas were a little out of sync and it's hard to picture a stick figure ballerina as a wanton gypsy woman but whatever. there was a little drag number that was hysterical and the guys were way more femmy than the girls...in a good way. it was very well done.

saturday was so gorgeous that i went for patio lunch with friends then a nice little bikeride along the lake and up into the west end. then home for dinner. bf made ribs (yum) and joseph came too so we could play xmen on the xbox....til almost 1am....oy was i tired!

sunday was a totally waste of a nice day. stupid me stayed in and did laundry and warcrafted all day. stupid because it was no nice out!

so lessons learned: sustainable farming is a good thing, you can make great ribs in the oven, ballet is ok in small doses, the lakeshore is great for biking, warcraft is for nights and rainy days!

first bike ride of the year

beautiful day out so i hopped on my bike and went for a great ride. found a couple of nice new (to me anyway) neighborhoods where all the good people of the world have been mowing and planting and washing their cars. i really love toronto: the sights, the smells (bbq's yum...buses..cough). so my legs are sore, my ass is kinda sore but it was a nice ride.

tonight the bf and i are actually spending the night in relaxing for a change. yay!

my digital life is a mess

i need help. i have the worst organized itunes on the planet, my digital pics are stored in folders because i can't figure out iphoto (not to mention the several hundred that languish on my camera) so i can never find the one i'm looking for, my hard drive got full again so i had to move stuff onto external storage but now that's almost full. every time i think about sitting down and getting it all cleaned up i'm overwhelmed and play warcraft instead.

can you hire a digital cleaning lady?

maybe i should take one of those iphoto lessons at the mac store......

so just saw wolverine, which i'd really been looking forward to, and gotta say it was .......ok. not great. not bad. just ok.

some thoughts:
- why do they always feel the need to screw with the timeline? there's lots of material, you don't need to recreate the story again
- the fx were kinda bad in some places. for instance, in the "bathroom destroyed" scene the claws aren't really attached to his hands, prof x's face is so cgi'd that it floats above his skin and the kids running to the helicopter are running above the ground. and that's just a few
- the final deadpool guy was a bit....ridic.
- hugh jackman is hot. nuf said
- liev shreiber might be hot but the most we see of his new bod is his fingernails

all in all the action scenes were good. script needed some work and some attention to the actual backstory would have been nice.

so see it....but i give it a 7.

so i got in trouble over xmas for never mentioning the kid on my blog. yes my bf has a daughter who came to live with us in 2007 and recently moved out on her own and just announced that her bf is moving in. my god i'm getting old.

henceforth she shall be know as H (more on her at a later date).

it's funny because i actually thought i was doing her a favour by keeping family stuff off of here. i thought i was respecting her privacy. i mean would you want your parent talking about you online?!

it turns out for gen y this is not the case. in fact it turns out i was disrespecting her.

which then got me to thinking about 'the kids' and how they really do approach tech/web stuff way differently than us x'ers do. i mean i like to think i'm a tech savvy kind of guy, maybe a little slow on the adoption of stuff i don't really use (like this sage rss reader which i'm now obsessed with.....5 years later...) but i get how to use stuff. maybe it's just that i don't feel the need to put my whole life on the tubes.

i mean i got onto facebook late in life and there is no way i'd link it to here or put up pics of me on some drunken rampage (not pretty btw). i mean people i work with see it (they read this too) but also clients of my firm can easily find it and i know i don't want them seeing the stuff i put on here!

i've talked to friends who've had to have little 'talks' with their staff about the contents of the facebook pages. their theory being if you want to post pics of your junk maybe you should create a page under a nom de porn and not link it to your work email.

so where is the privacy boundary for gen y? i actually don't think they have one. the public vs private got lost somewhere between email and web2.0 and now everything is just public. i thought maybe once they had finished school, got jobs, relationships that things would change but if it did it was too small a change for me to notice.

maybe that's the problem though, i'm looking for a line and it's more like a blur on the horizon.

as you know if you've been following my tweets, my computer (slash the work computer that i have claimed as my own) was mortally wounded at a work event a few weeks ago. the data recovery people are waiting for parts (dear fujitsu...ship them already!) before they can restore my data.

gotta say it's really sucked. i mean my ipod touch is great but you can't browse or post in any serious way from it. sorry apple, i love you but the typing isn't up to snuff. good for emergencies but not for lengthy missives.

the real tragedy in all this is my lich king expansion pack for warcraft is just sitting there in the box. i mean i was actually on time, pre-ordered, organized (which i never am by nature) and this is what i get. argh.

i know, they are a giant evil empire that is taking over the world. but in my defence they are the only ones in canada that make unsweetened american style iced tea. which i love. as great as tim horton's is they only have the bottled stuff which is just uncarbonated pop as far as i'm concerned and only to be drank when no other alternative is available.

plus my s'bucks near my office has the best team of any i've been to and they are all very nice and know my drink by heart and often have it ready before i've even ordered.

love that.

i confess i broke one of my own life rules this weekend. i abandoned a book. i had started reading christians and pagans by robin lane fox but i just couldn't do it. i kept reading the same pages over and over and nothing was sticking (not that much ever does but it was even less than usual).

so i started reading confessor which is the final (please god) in a series that has been going for over a decade. this is book 13. give me a break. if you stopped repeating everything 8 times we'd have been done at book 6! gah! (sorry..personal rant to terry goodkind).

i will say these are very good books. the story is complicated, more so than the usual fantasy stuff, and the characters are very well developed and flawed, which i like.

i heard they were making a movie of this series but i can't find any info that it's going ahead. not sure that i want it to actually.

maybe someday when i'm ready for a heavy book i'll return to the abandoned one. but next i'm going to read the golden compass novels. i'm hoping they are better than the movie which at least had an interesting concept.

totally missing my laptop. and by 'my' i mean the one that belongs to work but i drag home every day. sadly though when work needs it i have to surrender it. not good. it's amazing how often i reach for it and it's not there and then i get sad. i mean i totally needed to look up that obscure 'actor' on imdb but i couldn't!

not to mention the several months it's been since i played warcraft. according to the patch i downloaded last week they've changed the whole world! plus i have to respec all my alts and i really hate that. it takes hours. wow i'm such a geek.

but icky winter is coming and there will be more time for cocooning and warcrafting.

so it's the bronx bitch's birthday today. for those of you who don't know, the bb is my least favourite/most hated starbucks barista ever. hate her. i won't even get in her line. she's a nasty little piece of work with a weird bronx accent even though she lives/works in toronto.

i'd always assumed she'd been hatched or puked up like that half man thing in one of the poltergeist movies. but no. she was apparently "birthed".

i only found this out because while i was waiting for my usual iced-venti-unsweetened-light-ice-black-tea this afternoon the rest of the staff threw a lei and hat on her and sang happy birthday.

i managed to block out her name so there's no fear of her becoming more personalized in my mind. she is and always will be the bronx bitch.

got up...way too f'ing early for my tastes but that's what happens when you are surrounded by nature i guess. made the bf breakfast in bed (he's still reeling) so we could watch some murder she wrote (he's a huge fan. hates it when i spoil it).

before lunch we went to vicki's veggie's. very very cool. they had an heirloom tomato tasting today...over 50 kinds! it was awesome. yes i'm a huge foodie fag. fuck off.

came back and make an awesome tomato salad with onion and pepato cheese (like parmesan kinda but has pepper corns in it) with some toasted baguette. pics of my food porn (for daniel) will be available probably tomorrow.

spent the afternoon drinking veuve in a hammock with a good book. honestly, there is nothing more decadent or more satisfying. i could have died a happy man.

dinner was roasted fingerling potatoes (from vicki) done w garlic and butter, some more tomatos and bbq'd steak. haven't quite got the charcoal thing down yet so the steak was over cooked.

should have used my meat probe.

it started off as just a regular day. i was off sick from work but feeling better so i decided to do a couple of errands before once again taking to the couch. little did i know.

well actually i had an inkling. i mean it's not like it was the first time.

the scene of the crime was a mr. lube in my neighborhood.

i got my oil changed.

now, this might not seem to you like an actual raping but i drove out of there thinking "wow....what the fuck just happened!?".

they always advertise those $30 oil changes but i'd love to meet the guy that actually got one. i pull in and of course they are all busy but i do get a free paper (that's how they lull you).

DING! ROUND ONE! says the carnival barker...let's start with one of the smaller ones!

i'm asked to decide what kind of oil i want, filter, blah blah blah. i go with the ones recommended by honda. doesn't hurt all that bad.

DING! ROUND TWO! the barker is looking a bit more excited as he calls for another participant.

i need new air filters apparently. 3 of them. who knew there were air filters in my glove box!? i feign indifference and pretend like i know what they are talking about. i mean the old ones do look filthy.....

DING! ROUND THREE! ok boys....lets get some size into this one! the barker is practically sweating with glee and anticipation.

things have been going well....they are yelling shit...i'm ignoring them....uh oh. here they come. oh fuck this is going to hurt.

my injectors are dirty.

i don't even know what an injector is. does it need to be clean? do they wear out? are they even located in my engine?!

i drive my car. i take care of it. i put in the expensive gas cuz the manual said i had to. i get the oil changed before they car tells me it needs it. i try and pay attention. but let's face it...i don't have a fucking clue. i don't know where shit is, i don't know what it does. injectors? what the hell!?

great. so sure. let's clean 'em. i mean i've resisted the dripless oil rustproofing (sorry guy but i'm leasing and i don't care so back off!) but injectors sound serious.

fuck.

this all leads to me sitting in the mr. lube parking lot with my engine at 2000rpm for almost half an hour while some tube drips into my engine hoping to god this isn't some sort of punk'd stunt and fucking ashton kutcher isn't going to jump out and bust me.

DING! FINAL ROUND! the barker looks around...weighing/measuring his options...hey you! yeah you in the back...bring that big one up here and take a turn.....

$477. that's how much my "oil change" cost me.

if i ever win the lottery i'm going to open a garage, overpay the staff and only service ignant folks like me who don't know what the hell an injector does.

oh, for a little "tip" i got a bottle of brake fluid.

what the hell am i supposed to do with that?! he looked all happy and furtive when he handed it over but i'm left wondering...do my brakes leak? am i near death? will i die in a huge pile up ball of fire if i don't check the brake fluid constantly and top it up from my little bottle?! where do i check the damn brake fluid? left out that little bit didn't ya you bastard!

i left just thankful i still felt like a man. well as much as i ever do.

was invited to see the jays vs oakland last night (we were losing 3-0 when i left in the 4th) and i was wondering something while we were all standing at attention for the national anthems...do most americans realize their anthem ends in a question? it's so easy to miss with that last bit about "land of the free and home of the brave" especially since, when done right (not a la roseanne) the notes hit you hard and are so inspiring.

but do people realize that it's "does that star spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and home of the brave?".

worked all day yesterday (office closed for long weekend) which isn't so bad. i'm working today too which isn't great but i rarely have to work on weekends and it's year end so it's not so bad. what pisses me off is that it's shaping up to be the nicest weekend we've had in months and i would so rather be on the beach. but whatever. there will be other weekends.

today on the subway i sat down and at my feet was some chicks vomit covered tank top left over from what i can only assume was a rockin friday night. ew.

got off to get a haircut and a bunch of caribana girls got on in costume. it was hysterical! like the subway was being stormed by very large tropical birds.

i love this city.

to everyone at caribana....rock on! but let's hope for a violence free weekend ok?

been so freaking busy w work and life and summer and shit that i haven't been on in ages. haven't actually been on anything....haven't read blogs...posted stuff...played warcraft...you know...the stuff i used to do every day.

hopefully life will calm down soon but here's a brief recap of the last month or so:

-went to the beach
-toronto set a new record for rain. yay
-ran into the firefit contest
-beat younger ridiculously early rising coworker to the office multiple times and he's 24!
-saw batman - it rocked!
-got ping.fm and sorta tried to keep twittering even though i don't get updates on my bberry
-worked way way way too much
-good bike rides around the city
-put pics on flickr
-saw roger federer play tennis and lose
-felt bad that rubright got hit by lightening
-wondered if cb had lost a bunch o pounds or if it was just a weird/good camera angle
-had a great weekend w my sister and her husband and kids
-ate too much
-probably drank too much
-didn't go the gym
-watched way too much family guy
-ate good tacos made by daniel's new bf (so cute and he cooks!)
-played some xbox (xmen...so fun)
-watched a ton of stuff on my pvr

ok. so there you go. probably did more but can't remember. and now..onto year end at work! pray for me.

actually had a good day. went and had lunch w the bf and then hooked up w daniel. bf went to the parade but i wandered the street and then hit the beer garden. i avoid the parade at all costs...have issues with big crowds. beer garden was good though. ran into some folks...managed to hold onto a table for hours....good times...in spite of the seriously watered down vodka (wish i could drink beer).

after the parade the bf and i went to a friend's place near la village for a bbq. it was great! sat outside, eating grilled meat with good wine and nice people.

all in all i'd say it was a good day.

i have a huge backlog of pics to post to flickr and i just can't make myself do it. problem 1 is i'm a huge procrastinator. huge. problem 2 is i don't like the interface i have to use with my new camera. my old fuji showed up basically as an external hard drive on my computer. my new canon makes me use this stupid software that i don't want and dumb iphoto puts the pics god knows where (i prefer to file them myself thank you very much). but i gotta do it. maybe tonight. probably not but at least i recognize i have a problem.

so today we're leaving first thing (as soon as we eat breakfast) and driving to calgary. cool thing (maybe literally) is we're going to drive the glacier highway (i'm sure it has a real name but whatever) where it apparently often snows. even in june.

then flight from calgary to toronto.

weekend in jasper

the bf had to come to jasper to give a speech so i tagged along (points ticket+free hotel room=good deal). we drove from edmonton thursday morning and it was a beautiful sunny drive along the yellowhead highway.

the second we got to jasper it started to rain and hasn't stopped since.

gotta say though it is insanely beautiful here. the jasper lodge is, in my mind, unusual for a fairmont property in it's level of casualness, although you have to dress up for dinner in the nice restaurant. we have a little suite in a cabin that has 4 rooms in it but we got the one facing the lake, which is gorgeous.

we saw some big horn sheep and mountain goats on our way into the park and there were deer grazing outside the main door of the hotel the other day. i'm hoping to see more on the drive out (no i'm not going hiking in the rain to find an elk).

we're driving to calgary tomorrow through the glaciers so that should be cool.

and now i might have a mid morning nap.

got my tattoo yesterday and i love it! yes it might be a bit bigger than i had planned but i think it worked out ok. it looks kinda twisted in this pic because of the angle i had to turn my arm to but it's basically a circle on my inner wrist (duh).

not many people have seen it yet but everyone asks what it means. well that'll come later.

so my final film of the festival was a priscilla drag and sing along. i love this movie, as pretty much everyone should, and i did have a wig bought but sadly nobody in the audience dressed up. well, 8 people in the whole theatre did but we'd abandoned our plan. but it was fun singing along to the songs.

gotta say though that as much fun as the festival was, i'm glad it's over!

movie 13: lez be friends was sort of a sitcom set in 1969 just after the stonewall riots. apparently it was made by a gay man with 3 lesbian sisters (apparently it's in the water) but i actually found it to be fairly hateful. so i'm not gonna recommend it. at all.

thursday i saw saturn in opposition, also known as film 11, which was an italian film about a group of friends and how they cope when one of them dies. refreshingly the guy didn't die of aids. for once. the result was pretty much the same though. picture longtime companion, in italian, with an aneurism instead of aids, and subtitled. it was good except that i apparently hadn't read the description very closely and took a friend promising that it'd be a hot italian studfest.

then people started crying.

wednesday...film 10...aka dear god i'm tired

so last night was one of the "big films" of the festival, as in made by hollywood, full of hollywood people. it got kind of ridic when in every scene there was some new star walking into the shot. the film was the walker starring, among others, woody harrelson, lauren bacall, lily tomlin, ned beatty, willem dafoe and kristin scott thomas....the list goes on.

it was a good movie and i have to say that woody did a good job and that bacall is awesome (and gorgeous in a never been under the knife kinda way) but it was sort of out of step with the time i thought. it struck me about half way through that it'd be really good if it was set in the 50's or 60's, but daniel tells me that i'm wrong (not unusual) so maybe i'm just not all that connected to southern usa culture (not surprisingly since the "southest" i've been is disneyland in florida, which you could argue isn't even on the same planet let alone representative of the south).

i'd still say you should rent it. but don't buy it or pay full price as it's not exactly a "bigscreen" kinda flick. totally ok on a tv..even mine..which isn't flat or high def or connected to external speakers (yeah i get in trouble for that a lot too, not from daniel though since he doesn't have tv).

tonight should be a challenge as i have a work event from 6 to 9 then a film from 10 to 12. even i'm feeling like i need to go for a walk, or a massage...hm....

this might have been my favourite film so far. newcastle is a surfing drama that might just be the most beautifully filmed movie i've ever seen. about a third in you actually forget that the guys are really hot (and they really are in an 18 year old lots of abs and bleached out hair kinda way) you kinda get mesmerized by the cinematography. the way they follow the surfer along the wave until it flows over the camera so you can see it barreling through the ocean is hypnotic.

if you can find this on dvd somewhere please watch it.

thanks to the long weekend (thank you queen victoria) monday was a holiday so there was room for 2 films.

first up was 20,13, a portuguese war film set in mozambique during their civil war. it was good but we were still trying to figure out what happened well after we left the theatre, which i don't think is a good sign.

while still railing against the first film i went to see you belong to me. it was a really funny gay kinda horror flick. the woman who plays the landlady was awesome, as was the mandatory best female friend/ex -roommate.

so the first film i saw was a documentary about the art group general idea. it was really interesting since they started up before i was born and sort of ended when i was too young and stupid to appreciate them. i do remember seeing a small piece of their work at the national art gallery and even then it made a pretty big impression on me.

then we went to out at the wedding. it was pretty funny and generally a really cute movie. not sure i bought the "i'm animated" speech but what are ya gonna do.

on saturday i saw the lesbian-issues-resolving-flick this kiss. it was good. kinda. i'm not sure i bought the i love you i hate you i love you i hate you thing but tamsin gatewood was actually really good.

ok wow i'm really behind on this....kinda sat as a draft for a few days...oops...

saturday night was boystown. funny spanish film set in madrid's gay neighbourhood. it was kind of a bear themed campy murder mystery...only without all that much mystery.

sunday was a really good day. started off with mulligans which is a canadian film that deals with a closeted married man coming out thanks to a little help from his son's gay best friend. gotta say that dan payne who played the father totally made this movie. i would have loved a few more scenes with him jogging.....mm.mmm.mmm!

sunday night took a darker turn with savage grace. julianne moore plays a really psycho mother in this movie based on the life of a generation of the bakelite family. and really...this movie is seriously fucked up. awesome performances by all but truly disturbing. if hollywood wasn't so puritanical and uptight julianne moore would win an oscar.

saw it last night w doug. awesome movie. sort of follows the typical "meet the guy/backstory/create the hero/kick ass" formula but i gotta say it was really well done. the effects are amazing, r.d. jr is hot badboyness/hero guy (obviously been hitting the gym and doing a ton of squats), and it's funny! especially the learning to fly sequence. the tech stuff in the movie is so cool: i want his phone system and a.i. butler. definitely a fun movie to see on the big screen.

so here is my deep dark secret (well not so secret if you know me). i play world of warcraft. I know. somehow i became one of "those people" who spend hours/days on their computer running around a virtual world earning gold and trying to find better shoulder pads with a bonus +spell crit. it's sad. but i love it. it's fun, it's very social (i'm a co-founder of a guild), i have way too many alts (look it up) and spend a lot of time online. i still bathe, get the laundry done, go to movies and spend time with friends, but when i'm at home instead of watching tv i play wow. for the record i do not have a basement.

there i said it. judge me if you want.

the funny thing is that in the game, i'm not really considered much of a gamer at all. i rarely run instances (again, look it up), i don't do pvp, my gear isn't all that great and i'm not considered to be all that rich. i do however have a kickass flying blue dragon mount. it's awesome.

went to visit my sister on saturday and had to fill up on the highway. i know you expect to pay more for the convenience but.... for americans the math goes something like this:

i then had to fill up when i got back to toronto. luckily i only needed about half a tank:

busy week

wow. this week has just flown by! last friday i was pooped (you know in that it's been a hard week and i just want to go home and get into my jammies kinda way) so i ordered pizza and went to bed. awesome. saturday night we were having people over for dinner so the day was spent doing groceries and cooking. it was a great night! one of those dinner parties where everyone clicks and it goes way too late with too much wine.

sunday was my aniversary and i forgot. so bad. found out on the friday from a friend! and i'd scheduled dim sum (my most fave/bf's most hated sunday lunch) so while he went to the office i hung out with friends. it was gorgeous out so there was some wandering and shopping. picked up the most awesome anniversary gift i've ever done (this was 13 years and there have been some sucky gifts) - the cuisinart ice cream maker! he loved it! the inlaws came for dinner (steak and twice baked potatoes) which was cool (and super tasty) but man i was tired by the time they left!

now it's somehow already wednesday night! april is speeding by way too fast. but....it's gonna be 20C tomorrow! how awesome is that!

just browsing through my blog and realized that every video i've posted is "no longer available". fuck! first of all it took me ages to even figure out how to put videos on here, no i am not exactly a web guru, and now it seems that youtube has caved into legal/trademark/the law and taken down the stuff i was trying to keep/share. AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! i mean really. come on. it's not like i was downloading movies (which i don't do...mostly because torrents are a mystery to me) or stealing music (stopped that...only buy what i can scrounge on itunes). these were just silly little videos that were fun and weren't hurting anybody.

this just makes me want to go out and start pirating shit like crazy. do you see mediawhorelawyers!? do you see what you've done?! you've made an ally into the enemy!

oh, and to SNL who removed the one video of theirs that i had linked...i never watch your stupid show because as far as i can tell 99% of it sucks ass. the one time i think something is worth keeping and you take it away from me. do you really think this is the way to get new viewers? really?

oh thank the gods it's finally here! today is day 2 sans jacket. the sun is shining and people are everywhere, some in shorts (bit ridic....c'mon people it's not quite that warm)! it's a very funny thing to see this explosion of outdoor-ness after being cooped up all winter (worst in something like 50 years but i mean this is canada right). i've been watching for buds on the trees and they are there as of yesterday. soon they will pop open and the city will explode in green.

i think if i listened carefully i could actually hear the leaves open.

friday night lights

i know that usually refers to football but i got to go to the season opener of the blue jays friday night. to make it even better i got to go to a box right behind/above home plate! now that is a civilized way to see a game! and it was a pretty good game actually. the sad part is that i was one of about 6 people in the box actually watching. even sadder that i had to leave at the bottom of the 7th just when the red sox tied it up with an amazing triple scoring run. i did find out later that the jays won.....but it still would have been nice to be there.

so had a few people over for earth hour. i was pretty excited for this event because the blackout a few years ago was a really fun night and i was looking forward to a repeat. gotta say though that i was fairly disappointed. the first problem was the lights were supposed to go out at 8pm....but it was kinda still light out. so we waited and i don't think it really got all that much darker! it was cool that the CN tower was blacked out and you could see small pockets in neighbourhoods but downtown looked pretty much as lit as usual. overall i thought it was kind of a let down. on the flip side we had a great time, good food and maybe just a little bit too much to drink (shocking i know)!

i wonder how we could trigger another blackout this summer?

yesterday was pretty uneventful, as most of my days here have been. breakfast at freddy tucan's and then lunch at joe jack's fish shack. have to say they made a really good shrimp nicoise salad. the rest of the time was spent laying around reading. life is hard down here!

decided to go see the kinsey sicks last night since it's becoming something of a tradition. as usual they were awesome. some of the material was recycled but the new stuff was really good and they had the whole audience in stitches. in a "the role of trampolina will be now be played by" switch they had a new member who was good....but not as good as the original.

oh, my new fave drag names:

the show was at manana which is one of the most beautiful bars i've ever been in. it's an old house that's been converted but the main area doesn't have a roof. it's just really pretty. and they added a waterfall that comes off the dance floor roof into the pool which i thought was a nice touch. plus i really like their logo.

after the show i stuck around for a drink...or 2....and noticed a very strange phenomenon. i don't usually pay any attention to the "let's all take our shirts off, tuck them in our pants and dance" party boys (mostly because they are boring) but last night they were pretty much the only people dancing and i have a theory that they can be put into "dance types":

1. my arms only move from the elbows down guy. kind of dances the way you'd thing c3po would (star wars reference)
2. my arms just go up of their own accord and since i can't put them down i'm going to grind my pelvis into the nearest pelvis i can find
3. i have no rhythm so i'm just gonna shuffle around and talk to people (often seen being ground by number 2)
4. i am going to hit every single beat in the song no matter how fast it goes (results in looking like he's moving in fast forward and may cause damage due to flailing body parts)

i'm going to see how this theory holds up next time i'm out at home. feel free to add any types i've missed!

trying to find dinner at 1130pm was a bit of a challenge but i ended up at a taco place that was awesome.

so now i just have to pack and get to the airport. gotta say this week was just what i needed and i am actually looking forward to getting back to work. we'll see how long that feeling lasts tomorrow in the office.

i had a very low key day yesterday. walked to the beach for breakfast (not so good) then lounged by the pool for a bit. i walked to my new fave street meat and stocked up on quesadillas then took them home and spent the rest of the day watching movies in my room.

i'm totally relaxed and refreshed which was the reason for this trip in the first place but now it's time to go home.

think i'll spend today reading. the new book is weird and it took me a while to get into it but now it's moving along nicely. although in the future i may avoid books written by mexican poets.

just a thought.

this week sure is speeding by! saturday was a great day. got up a little late but had chilaquilles con pollo at freddy tucan for breakfast (they are the best just for future reference). then i lounged by the pool for a few hours (why do i keep thinking i can take off my hat?). little bit pink again (my nose is actually bright red, not good) so i think i'll be out of the sun again today. i had a bad club sandwich for lunch (you have to really work to make a bad club sandwich) and then more lounging (shade).

the shopping here hasn't really changed at all. same stuff as always, some if might actually be the exact same stuff as always! but i did buy 3 new pairs of flipflops that are nice and weren't any more expensive than i'd pay at home.

had dinner at fajita republic last night, which despite being a total tourist trap actually serves damn good fajitas. one note, when you are eating alone they don't flame the fajitas at your table. bastards.

so now off to breakfast (not sure where yet) and then yet another day of laying around.

oh i somehow ripped the ass out of my jeans so i guess it's shorts all the way home.......hope it isn't too cold when i get there!

oh man they were good. and i found a new kind besides my beloved machaca: chili relenos burritos! a cheese stuffed and coated roasted pepper burrito. so good! although all that cheese was a bad idea.

needless to say i slept late today, which was nice for a change as i've been up at 830 or so since i got here. went and had lunch at picnic, spent the afternoon tanning by the pool then on my balcony then dinner at joe jack's fish shack (the shrimp and avocado tostadas were out of this world!). one very good thing about vacationing solo is you get to bypass the lines of people waiting for a big table (i was feeling pretty smug about it too).

and now just chilling out at the hotel. maybe play a little warcraft before bed..........

and tomorrow....probably a lot like today!

oh it's weird but pretty much every person here seems to have a laptop. in a city of free wifi every ten feet it's pretty great. and a large number of those laptops are macs! viva la revolucion!

however! i did meet some great lesbians from new york; their straight friends from toronto who were surprised to find out it is lesbian week in pv (one vaguely related to g.h. johson's but more on that later), a french guy who's related to the ove design guy we just had a consultation with at my office who's planning to open a catering business in PV (yeah I'll hold my breath); a guy from michigan and an ex-mormon who both live in iowa or ohio....i can never keep them straight; and finally the guy who hosts "fairy tale" on toronto gay tv along with his bf rob (slash barbie) who i remember from london with whom we're all apparently supposed to go zip lining later this week.

phew.

wow. perhaps I was a tad too social. in my defence they were all very nice people!

i was at a dinner party recently at my friends linda and rick's house and it was a great night full of everything a dinner party should be: good food, interesting people and even more interesting conversation. after dinner when we had gone to the living room for coffee and tea, one guest asked me what book i'd read that i thought had changed my life. it'd been a fairly literary crowd so a book question wasn't totally out of left field but i did think this one was a bit of a challenge. i mean a life changing experience is a pretty tall order. i didn't hesitate all that much and threw out the history of god (which yes took me a year to get through) and the botany of desire (i'll never look at an apple, tulip or marijuana plant the same way again). sadly i'd forgotten to add blindness to the list.

well i now have a 4th. i don't know if changing the way you look at something in the world is a "life changing experience" but it feels damn close. i just finished the omnivore's dilemma and it was one of the most interesting and thoughtful books i've ever had the joy of reading. i will be passing it around to friends and might even ship some to people further away. i can't wait for the "meat eating as a way to save a species" debates that will rage with some vegetarians i know!

we may even have to take a road trip and do a little foraging for ourselves.

anyway, read the book. you will thank me for it.

well by some miracle my air canada flight was on time, the personal tv system worked and the flight was uneventful. i did have to pay for a sandwich but i used the business class bathroom so it all balanced out.

my hotel is ok. the room is small (think italy small) but very clean and i have a nice west facing balcony to watch the sunsets from. i didn't really do all that much last night. once i got unpacked i located the people who used to own chili's (gone) at their new restaurant called picnic. same food but new location. their patio is at the bottom of those really long stairs (if you've been here you know what i mean) and it's nice. then i went and had a nap for about an hour. so nice.

after the nap i felt like a cocktail so i went to garbo's. good jazz (pre recorded) and dim lighting. some lesbians concerned for my eyesight gave me their candle (i was reading a book). i couldn't figure out where to go for dinner so i just walked around. then i decided to take a taxi to the treehouse restaurant. well after driving around in circles trying to give vague directions in a language i don't speak we found it. but it's called los arbolitos in spanish. oh well. derek i had the tortilla soup and thought of you.

walked back down to my hotel (had a few drinks on the way) and collapsed.

god i love this place.

so now i've had breakfast (casa de los hotcakes) and am off to the beach.

i came across this article from the toronto star today and couldn't believe what i was reading. it's something i'd expect to hear happening in the deep american south. i always hope that canadians are a little bit better on race relations than our neighbours to the south, even though i know first hand that stupidity and ignorance are a universal thing and not isolated to america.

but still....come on! it's 2007 for fuck's sake!

decided to not be a loser last night so i cabbed up to boystown for dinner. ended up at jack's on halstead. really good dinner although way too much food. had panko crusted skatewing. god i love panko!

then i decided it'd be nice to go have a nice quiet drink. there's a piano bar called gentry's so i thought that sounded nice. and while yes they do have a piano it was being used as a base for the dj. less than quiet. the karaoke bar up the street didn't seem to be doing karaoke and instead had a smoke machine going non-stop. ugh.

someone around here needs to spend some serious time updating the chicago gay websites.

oh, and you can still smoke in bars. it's gross.

the best i was able to do was cell block. a leather bar. how odd is that. it was mercifully empty and so i managed to snag a table, have a few drinks, read my book and watch anime cartoons. it was odd.

then back to the hotel where i couldn't sleep so i flicked through the tv channels a million times. flawless was on. pretty good movie.

now i'm up. have to check out at noon but don't have to be at the airport til 430pm. guess i'll do some more wandering.

saturday in chicago

woke up almost paralyzed this morning. apparently my body has forgotten what it feels like to sleep in a good bed. i could barely move. ate my breakfast delivery (really really good parmesan hashbrowns) and then spent an hour trying to find somewhere to have a massage. finally got a 2pm appointment. it helped a lot. spent the rest of the day wandering the magnificent mile, where there are surprisingly few places to eat, window shopping. didn't buy a thing.

did manage to have a good lunch at pierre gourmet.

so now it's 745pm and i'm sitting in my hotel contemplating whether or not to got out for dinner/drinks or just call it a night. god i am so boring. i just can't figure out why i'm so tired all the time. maybe it's that yuppy thing.

just in from the wedding

in the W robe with a bottle of minibar white wine open. was a great time. small wedding...really really huge cathedral (bigger than your average church). mother of the bride and i are instant best friends (she's an ex flight attendant so it's only natural) so there'll be visits in toronto for sure. i felt it was ok to leave when the bride and her sister/friends started doing a synchronized dance number to johnny cash's "ring of fire".

and now it's only 1030pm and i'm heading for bed. yes i am that boring but i can't remember the last time i didn't wake up tired and the W bed (that big, fluffy, over-pillowed, down-matress-covered gorgeous bed) is calling to me.

so i'm taking my glass of chardonnay and saying goodnight! oh! can't forget to order my breakfast delivery.....god i could just live in a hotel.

this hotel is so cool it hurts. i have a lovely room on the 30th floor but sadly not on the lake side. instead i have a view of other buildings, which might be fun later on.

room service will hopefully come soon and maybe i can nap again before i am off to the wedding.

oh. there are wood shutters from the bathroom to the bedroom area. very odd.

good seat on a relatively nice 757, i think that's what it was. on the aisle, just like i like it, with nobody in the middle seat, which is awesome. i napped, i think, a bit and watched tv for a bit. no food but i managed to snag a glass of water between naps.

then just as we were landing the guy in 21C, across the aisle, got all surreptitious with his blanket and slipped it into his briefcase. it was very odd. of all the things to steal why would you bother with an airplane blanket?

so i got on the subway to go home from work, which i do almost every day, but for some reason i got on the wrong direction. took me a few minutes to figure out why the stops looked different. so no big, i transferred to the bus which drops me off right in front of my building.

a bit later i was making bacon, the precooked kind, for a sandwich and it caught on fire in the microwave. how is that even possible?

labour day weekend continued

once again i have to say that i live for 4 day weekends. shopping w chad on saturday (see new camera posting), i love spending other people's money! out for dinner to oyster boy saturday night (6 dozen oysters is a lot). sunday we went for dim sum to the usual place on dundas (can never remember the name but it's upstairs from the starbucks) and then i had to do some groceries for dinner sunday night (people over). monday was great as daniel finally got a bike so we grabbed patrick and went for a good long (very long in my mind) bike ride. it was great! took the beltline over to mount pleasant cemetary (very nice place for a bike ride), lunch from summerhill market, then skipped over to the brickworks and the don valley trail to river street. patrick had to go home so daniel and i continued west to the distillery and queen's quay. i finally bailed at the cne (mistake...so much traffic/people) and home. all in all a busy but good weekend.

of course i managed to get some serious warcraft time in as well. so much to do!

woo hoo! new toy

i've been dying for a new camera for some time now. mine is rather large (cutting edge 7 years ago but now.....) and has been having some issues (needs to be banged on a table once and a while) so today....was out shopping with chad....and bought a new toy! can't wait to use it.....if the damn battery would just hurry up and charge......

labour day weekend
